Fact FileGiant wetas are huge insects that grow up to 4 inches long, not including the antennae. Although they look scary they are harmless to humans. It can weigh 3 times more than a normal mouse, making it the heaviest insect on earth. Giant wetas have being known to eat a carrot a lot faster than the average human. This insect is very brave and will stand its ground to cats and can look intimidating when it raises its back legs. There are over 70 species of weta in new Zealand and some of the closest relatives to the giant weta are tusked weta, cave weta and tree weta. It may look like it could fly or jump high, but it lives on the ground. Since it doesn't have lungs it breathes out of its exo skeleton.
